  Act three: RAWA Community School Story

   

  Sarah Mortimer, the Principal from RAWA community school shares her amazing journey with how “Two-Way Learning” curriculum model is used in this remote community school. This video taken at the school, as authentic as it gets, this story is one that you don’t want to miss. Its inspiring, its incredible and its happening in our own back yard.

  
  

  The video is worth the odd fly interruption, and un-edited background filled with student posters on the wall, to hear how Sarah and the community have mapped their “Two-Way learning” model. A model that meets WA curriculum, whilst prioritising the Matru curriculum.

  Join us for this mid-winter free event as we visit Lady Gowrie Early Learning Centre Midway Point, on 25th July at 6:30 pm!

  
  

  Cumulus Studio collaborated with childcare providers Lady Gowrie to redevelop a former Department for Education, Children and Young People centre. The design gently welcomes children and creates a flexible space that allows staff to offer adaptable, imaginative care.

   

  We wanted to create a welcoming space that would immediately ease any anxiety children feel when they leave their parent's side at the start of the day. We’ve divided what was once a bare space into different zones, like an indoor play space, a wet area for craft and dining, and a quiet reading corner tucked away from noisy activity. The connection to the landscape and outdoor play form an integral part of the care and learning environment. 

   

  The existing space hadn't been altered since it was built. It was a typical institution building from the sixties, made from reddy-orange brick, grey concrete blocks and timber. Though the site has stunning views, high-level windows didn’t make the most of them. Rather than start from scratch, our design makes the most of the existing structure by reinvigorating and reusing what we can, leaning on the natural material palette. New child-height windows now make the most of that connection to the water.

  LEARNING SPACES AOTEAROA 2024

  
  

  Learning Spaces Aotearoa is a one-day conference aimed at connecting those passionate about designing learning spaces and transforming the lives of the people that use them.

  
  

  The theme of this year’s LSA conference is Design for Wellbeing.

  
  

  The design of a learning space can promote the physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being of the users.

  
  

  Presenters and site visits will explore the intersection of the physical environment, education, and well-being in Aotearoa. This will include topics such as mātauranga māori, biophilic design, building science and architecture. We will learn how spaces facilitate wellness through design.

  
  

  

  
  

  
  

  Hosted at Te Auaha, MC Derek Weymouth, will guide delegates through a full day of talks and site visits showcasing the best of what contemporary learning spaces can offer.

  
  

  This year's event begins with our Keynote speaker Dr. Julia Atkin who is universally recognised for her rich understanding of learning and thinking and providing practical ways to support teachers and leaders in enhancing learning for all.

  
  

  The day will continue with a series of WĀNANGA by industry experts in education, design and research. Each talk is designed to provoke and stimulate thinking around cultural influences, school-wide learning culture, climate change, collaborative pedagogy and how we involve tamariki in the design process.

  
  

  In addition to our speakers, we also have site visits - an opportunity to explore some of the newest, unique and contemporary learning spaces in Te Whanganui a Tara.

  
  

  The day will conclude with Bookend speaker Principal and disrupter in education, Nicola Ngarewa.
