Rejuvenation of a Campus:

The Kambri Cultural Precinct and Hanna Neumann Building @ ANU

WHEN: Wednesday 24 November 2021, 7.00 - 9.00am

WHERE: Kambri Precinct, Australian National University, Acton, ACT

COST: Members/Students - FREE, Non-Members - $30.00

The morning will commence at Union Court, the heart of the university campus. From this vantage point, the 6 new buildings that address Union Court, and the significant and reinvigorated gathering space they now create, can be fully appreciated.

The tour will move first into the Marie Reay Teaching Centre, a building that clearly articulates the ANU’s shift towards more informal, blended and student-centred learning environments. Predominantly open floor plates, operable partitions and a distinct lack of fixed furniture, allow for multiple opportunities for use by the student population.

The tour will then move onto the Hanna Neumann Building which houses the ANU’s Mathematical Sciences Institute and Computer Science in a shared teaching and research hub. Opened in March 2019, the internal spaces create innovative, flexible and social learning and working spaces, promoting teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration. The building also responds to, and reflects, its landscape setting and the importance of STEM to both the university and community, through the sophisticated use of materials, patterns and symbolism. We will tour the building, now in operation for over two years, and discuss the unique challenges faced by the University and users in the shift to more flexible working environments. The discussion will take a ‘lessons learnt’ perspective, focusing on the complex process of change and adaptation.

Together, these spaces demonstrate a concerted move from the ANU to embrace contemporary educational pedagogy through the transformation of their campus into a modern, engaging and reinvigorated city hub.
