Flexible Learning Spaces in a New Zealand university: Rehua Building, a case study at the University of Canterbury

Join us online to hear the latest research.

Speaker: Associate Professor Julie Mackey

The presentation will focus on the vision to create flexible learning and teaching spaces in a university, what the learning and teaching spaces look like, and how that pushed the boundaries for the university back in 2014.

The rationale for an activity-based model will be outlined and how that translated to a compromise with some offices and some open plan spaces, and the different types of space (eg sanctuaries). Also, discussed will be some of the accommodations and mitigations such as adjustable desks, the shift to digital ways of working, and the use of booking and appointment systems.

It will conclude by discussing how those spaces are now regarded as desirable and high demand spaces.
