The Nazareth Catholic Community Caritas Senior Centre provides additional administration and student facilities with learning areas at ground and first floor level. A link way through the existing library at first floor level connects with the existing upper floor balconies. Conceptually the building form and spatial arrangement is derived from its connection to the river and draws inspiration from local flora as a metaphor for learning.
This site provides opportunity for views across Linear Park and direct access to waterways and diverse flora and fauna in an inner city setting. The building form addresses the river by snaking along the boundary to maximise exposure and reflect the unique quality of the site. The ground floor of the building takes inspiration from the trees lining the river. Timber elements fork in random directions referencing the architecture of the trees and branches. The tree is used as a reference to draw on its calming influence. The two previous design principles are brought together upstairs which expresses the ‘light river’ found in the tree canopy above the river.
