The Jeffrey Smart Building provides a new focus for the University of South Australia’s City West Campus. Wrapping around a central courtyard as the first major green space on campus, the building incorporates a diverse spectrum of teaching and learning spaces, library, student and staff services.

The central courtyard, with its open air cinema screen, green public area and an established tree, works to reinforce the urban character of the campus. The community of learning and student activity animates all levels of this building and promotes vibrancy to the west end of the city.

At the scale of the student and academic, a range of differing spaces facilitate different modes of learning. The contemporary learning narrative includes books and small-scale study areas, digital and virtual resources as well as more collaborative and social learning environments.

The project is student centred and brings together for the first time a wide range of services: Library, Learning and Teaching Unit (including counselling and career services), Campus Central (Student and Academic Services), ISTS (Information Services and Technology), Student Ombudsman and FM Assist (Security and Campus Operations).
