Experience 'The Sphere' and QUT's New Faculty of Education Precinct

Come and explore QUT’s new Faculty of Education Precinct including ‘The Sphere’ while listening to some of the latest research and practice on the relationship between learning environments and wellbeing.

The symposium will be followed by a tour of the new Faculty of Education Building including the opportunity to network over drinks and refreshments.

1.     Scaffolding and Frameworks for Educational Design:  Dr Janet Buchan

Janet will introduce some take-home frameworks that emerged from national research projects in the tertiary sector and describe how they have been applied to the design and evaluation of learning spaces in a variety of settings.

2.     Designing School Spaces for Wellbeing and Learning

  • Conceptualising wellbeing for school design: Professor Jill Franz will introduce the joint presentation by identifying concepts that reveal the relational nature of wellbeing, learning and the physical school environment. Following on from the presentations by Hilary Hughes and Jill Willis she then proposes a new model of ‘wellbeing as flourishing’ and associated with this a salutogenic framework for school design.
  • School design and pedagogic possibilities:  Dr Jill Willis identifies some of the ways that learning spaces influence the patterns, choices and actions for learning in schools. Illustrative examples from student and teacher perspectives will highlight pedagogic potential.
  • Participatory designingAdjunct Associate Professor Hilary Hughes explains how a participatory approach to learning space design contributes to the wellbeing of those who use learning spaces: students, teachers and the wider school community. Examples from school-based projects illustrate participatory design process and outcomes.
  • Architectural design - Hamilton Wilson, Managing Director from Wilson Architects will discuss  leading the design of the QUT facility in conjunction with Henning Larson from Copenhagen.
