The new Teaching and Learning Building for Scotch College presented an opportunity to listen to students and explore their ideas.
The design process was huge, requiring clear communication and collaboration from all stakeholders. In this session we are presenting opportunity to hear from Educators, Architects and Landscape Architects on how they approached this challenging project.

Each of these 3 presenters will pick their favourite spot in the building to present from and later answer questions from participants.

The building focuses on Mathematics and Commerce education and will accommodate approximately 500 students when fully utilised. The spaces consist of staff administration areas, general, multipurpose teaching areas and meeting rooms connected by a learning street that provides a dynamic, active and flexible learning and social environment.

Generous student interactive external areas on the north and south sides allow a range of passive recreational uses. Externally, the material and colour palette draw contextual references from the face brick and limestone cladding of the campus, overlaid with the textural, rhythmic qualities inherent in the traditional House Tartans of the school.

The interior design draws inspiration from the mathematical works of Descartes, Euclid and Alan Turing to provide a subtle thematic layering throughout the building to enable the use of the building as a learning tool. The exterior and landscaping enhances these themes with flowing mathematical lines, and purposeful spaces for students to learn and relax.
