University of Canberra:
Designing Spaces for the Future of Higher Education

There are significant similarities between the needs of professionals when it comes to good workplace design, and students in relation to learning space design. Both need to create opportunities for meaningful interactions with others, as well as information and technology. Realising this, the University of Canberra is constructing working and learning spaces that help people connect and facilitate activities such as co-creation, communication, and that support wellbeing. Gillen (2019) describes wellbeing as “a desirable level of comfort for people to work well”, and this is a feature of the recently developed spaces.
Please join us for a tour of the University’s new, contemporary open plan work spaces led by Senior Design Manager Zoe Lewis. We will consider the varied approaches to the design of future workspaces in the educational setting. Following this, will be a tour of the freshly unveiled Level C of the library building, designed for student study and collaboration both physical and blended. The group will then be addresses by the University’s Dean of Education who will facilitate a discussion about polysynchronous learning and the implications for learning space design.
