WA Chapter - Butler College Site Tour

Join CEFPI for a presentation and tour by Taylor Robinson of Butler College Stage One and the recently completed Year 7 Integration Building.
The new Butler College is a ‘state of the art’ educational facility located in this fast developing area of the northern suburbs and provides learning environments that are safe, supportive and considerate of the physical, emotional and behavioural needs of its students. It is a fully inclusive school catering for mainstream students as well as an eventual cohort of 70 high needs students in the Education Support Learning Community. The College, constructed in two stages, is designed to accommodate over 1500 students when Stage 2 is completed in 2015.

Architecturally, the establishment of an environmentally responsive and attractive campus supports the highly varied physical, emotional and behavioural requirements of mainstream as well as high needs students.  Key design aspirations included :

•    Developing the design to create a strong presence and sense of identity, particularly in areas of significance such as the main campus entrance, edges of the campus, the heart of the campus and iconic buildings requiring street and community presence.

•    Fostering adult learning with indoor as well as interactive outdoor courtyard and community spaces

•    Refining the building fabric, with particular attention to materiality, constructability, structural and service implications, responsive to the environment and aesthetic.

•    Developing a vibrant interior design to create an identity for each learning block and an interactive teaching and learning environment, as well as maintaining an economic and practical design solution.

•    Identifying ecologically sustainable design initiatives.
