'Emerging Findings from ILETC Research Project'

    presented by Chris Bradbeer

Chris Bradbeer is a Research Fellow (part time), on The Innovative Learning Environments & Teacher Change Project 2016-2019 being run by The University of Melbourne, an Associate Principal at Stonefields School in Auckland, Chair-elect for Learning Environments Australasia, and currently completing a PhD, focusing on the nature of collaborative teacher practices in Innovative Learning Environments in New Zealand.

The Innovative Learning Environments & Teacher Change Project (ILETC): What are we learning?

The Innovative Learning Environments & Teacher Change Project 2016-2019 is being run by The University of Melbourne. It is investigating how teachers can use the untapped potential of Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs) to improve learning outcomes for students. It aims to identify whether there is a link between quality teaching and effective use of ILEs, and to develop practical tools to assist teachers to adapt their teaching practices to maximise deeper learning. This presentation will give an overview of the project, details some of the findings to date, as well as outline the Project’s next steps, and highlight opportunities for involvement.

After the speakers' question time there will be the opportunity to tour the newly completed Ara Kahukura building.

Creating warm welcoming spaces to enable refugees to flourish in their new home

The staff at the Mangere Refugee Centre are dedicated to ensure that everything they do says to the refugees who enter the centre: “Welcome home”; “We respect and value you”; “You deserve the rights that all human beings deserve”.

Listen to Mangere Refugee Education Centre Director, Maria Hayward and Clive Chapman from Pacific Environments NZ Ltd talk about how new buildings were developed on site which, in addition to being welcoming, warm and comfortable, are able to accommodate the highest quality teaching experience for the learners who have education gaps to fill and are very keen to learn as much as possible in a short period of time.

Each of the Flexible Learning Spaces is built in a three class model composed of three transportable pieces. Each of the four modules is laid out slightly differently depending on the use of that block by the school. The pedagogy of the Refugee Centre differs from a normal school as all members of a family are enrolled and taught the skills that they will need to flourish in New Zealand.
