The Learning Environments Australasia (LEA) Western Australian Awards program seeks to enhance the profile of places and spaces that support and improve learning through the design of educational facilities across Western Australia.

Open to members of LEA, the awards will celebrate, recognise and reward outstanding projects that significantly improve learning processes and outcomes. To support this, the LEA WA Awards Program is based on the Regional Awards categories and the eligible winning entries from the WA Awards will have their fee paid for entry into the LEA Regional Awards program in 2019.

If you are an LEA member but have not been involved in a project recently completed and occupied, you are eligible to nominate as a juror in the 2018 WA Chapter Awards.

Judging is based on submissions only (no site visits expected) and jury members are required to be available for judging in September/October 2018.

If you are interested in becoming a juror, please contact LEA WA Awards Coordinator Lara Mackintosh at by 29 June 2018.

Successful nominations will be placed on the list of jurors.

    26 APRIL 2018

A lively contest about the future of our education system where ideologies come head to head!

Join Learning Environments Australasia - Victoria Chapter for our inaugural debate. The evening will be hosted by Maxine McKew and feature an all-star line-up of multi-disciplinary speakers.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided from 5:15pm, prior to the debate commencing at 6pm sharp! The event is being hosted by The University of Melbourne at the award-winning Arts West Building, recipient of the Overall Learning Environments Australasia Award for Excellence in Educational Facilities 2017.

We are delighted to announce our speakers:

Scott Alterator is an academic at La Trobe University. He is an award-winning educator with experience at secondary and tertiary level. His Doctoral research focused on the relationship between the built form and teaching and learning outcomes. He understands that uniting the education and design narrative is essential for success.

Marc Blanks is the Executive Director of the Banyule Nillumbik and Whittlesea Tech Schools. He has worked across primary and secondary schools and spent three years as a senior project officer in the digital learning branch of the Victorian Department of Education and Training.

Deborah Cordingley currently works in the Victorian Department of Education; however her passion is promoting and teaching Humanities in the classroom. Deborah is interested in how Humanities’ teachers are valued in the current education space. She is a committee member for Humanities 21, and promotes Philosophy for Children (P4C) globally.

Wayne Hay is a senior project architect at Baldasso Cortese. He has planned, led, and delivered award-winning designs for a range of education projects in the USA, Australia, and New Zealand. Wayne places high importance on research and an inclusive design process to help schools turn their objectives into great designs.

We are also thrilled to have two student debaters joining each team:

Eloisa Moses-McMahon is a year 10 student at Albert Park College. She is the senior environmental leader and ambassador at the college. Eloisa has a strong interest in politics, and is passionate about the environment. She loves public speaking, and is a part of the school’s senior debating team.

Oscar Pearce is a year 10 student at Albert Park College. In 2017 he was awarded the best speaker in the Brighton Region which recognises he achieved the top score in his region for the Junior Debaters Association of Victoria Public Speaking Awards.

    • Hilton Hotel Sydney

Join us at the Sydney Hilton Hotel in May for LEA's 18th annual conference.

We live in a world of exponential change. With this in mind, the 2018 conference seeks to rethink the 3Rs for the exponential age. Once they were readin’, ritin’ and ‘rithmetic, in the second decade of the 21st Century they are reimagined as Reflection, Relevance and Revolution.

Compered by the incomparable Adam Spencer, The 3 Rs features keynotes from Pasi Sahlberg, Richard Gill, Claire Madden and Peter Hutton, as well as thought-leader workshops, special social functions and site tours to Sydney's innovative learning spaces.

Given the recent Melbourne conference attracted 800 delegates, we expect The 3 Rs to sell out as our Sydney venue is limited to only 575 delegates.

Check out the The 3 Rs Program.pdf

We are offering current LEA members exclusive access to early bird registration at special member rates from now until March 4.

Click here for Members-only Early Bird Registration

Any remaining early bird tickets will be sold to the public from March 5 - April 1.

Questions? Contact our friendly conference organisers, BCC Management.

This is the regular publication of the Victorian Chapter of Learning Environments Australasia documenting entries in the annual Victorian Chapter awards program.

Now in its 9th edition, it is an invaluable ongoing resource for anyone with an interest in the design of learning spaces.

The WA Chapter's ‘Thinking About Learning’ celebrates the unique diversity of educational projects completed by LEA WA members over recent years.

As a collection, the projects provide comment on current emerging trends, thoughts and ideas about learning and the spaces in which it occurs. Each project included conveys a different way of thinking about learning, and provides a link between educational theory and the built understanding of the learning process.
