New Beginnings - Onehunga High School

Onehunga High School is a co-educational, multi-cultural state secondary school, which serves a wide range of ethnic, social, and economic situations. With inclusivity and diversity at its core, the school prides itself on creating meaningful learning pathways for all.

The design brief included master planning of the site, allowing for a reduced, but redeveloped number of teaching spaces within stage 1, and an expansion of 63 teaching spaces for the future. This resulted in the demolition of dilapidated buildings, two new buildings: the technology block and gymnasium, outdoor landscaping, re-configured car parking and the renovation of an existing building into a satellite unit.

Previously isolated faculties are now connected across the new technology block and gymnasium, enabling cross-curricular engagement and shared teaching spaces.

All spaces were designed with maximum natural light and passive ventilation, particularly in the centre of the tech block’s wide floorplate - achieved with clerestory windows.

Disruption to the school was mitigated by staging of the development, made more complex by the steep site offering limited physical space, and areas of unstable soil.

Above all, these new spaces support Onehunga High School with flexibility and coherence as it continues to grow and respond to its evolving master plan.
