ACT CHAPTER EVENT #1 2023

TRANSLATING BRIEFS INTO SPACE:

EVELYN SCOTT SCHOOL

Photographer: Ben Wrigley

Located in Denman Prospect, Canberra, Evelyn Scott School’s junior campus opened in 2021. The start of the 2023 school year has seen the opening of the senior facilities, with the school now welcoming nearly 600 learners from P-10. As a Future Focused school, students learn through inquiry-based approaches that connect learners and their learning to the world.

Attendees will hear from Foundation Principal Jackie Vaughan, and architect and Hayball Principal Dave Tordoff. The tour will visit the newly opened buildings, focusing on the senior learning communities and shared facilities, and discuss how the contemporary design is supporting their approach to teaching and learning.

The event will focus on three key issues:

  • The challenges of designing and delivering new school infrastructure without an existing community to engage with;
  • The ongoing staff workshops being facilitated by the design team and the challenges of equipping staff and students with the skills to work effectively in contemporary learning environments; and
  • The link between these contemporary spaces and the future focused pedagogies embraced by the school.
