A living laboratory for conservation education and scientific investigation, built to empower the scientists of tomorrow.

This newly completed facility replaces the Zoo’s existing education centre, and provides learning programs for learners from kindergarten to PhD level and beyond in a range of immersive habitat spaces.  The building accommodates the largest conservation team of any zoo in the southern hemisphere.

Join us for this unique event to visit this world class facility by NBRS Architecture, hear the background story and explore the variety of spaces.  This is an opportunity to go behind the pictures and get the story of the collaborative design team process from initial concept through to detailed design, realisation and operation.

The teaching & learning spaces are themed around arid, woodland and rainforest habitats.  The Institute contains multidisciplinary research and teaching labs for the study of animal welfare and conservation science, and digital teaching labs and facilities for the Taronga Cryoreserve, which houses more than 200 billion cells from the Great Barrier Reef.

In addition to this, the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning has been awarded a maximum six-star green star certification, assessed on the sustainable design, construction and operation of buildings.
