Site Visit: Hayward Midson Building, Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie)

The Chapter's first site visit for 2016 will be to the Hayward Midson Building at Churchie on Tuesday 22 March 2016.  The event will commence at 2:30 p.m.

About the Project

The Creative Precinct brief was to bring co-joined buildings into one pedagogic space, to act as a conduit for the re-definition of the learning happening within. The problem-solving and project-based nature of the subjects taught in the building was already heavily dependent on technological mediated learning, but now the school needed a space to appropriately bring the subjects together. The subsequent 'open-studio ' design allowed students to occupy and transit between didactic teaching spaces, specialist technology-enabled workshops, and highly flexible inside and outside communal spaces. This dynamic cycle of occupation and transition has supported students as they navigate through the intuitive creative process.

The design exploited the understanding that technology mediated, creative learning occurred with a range of people and through a variety of modalities. The studios and workshops are not tight, static, hierarchical containers of learning, but social and inviting spaces that encourage a full utilisation of equipment and expertise throughout the building.

Issues of natural light penetration, energy efficiency, acoustic performance, dust-extraction, increased spatial requirements and equitable access had to be addressed as well as increased passive supervision requirements across specialised studios, open plan studio areas, and machinery work shop areas.

Presentation:  Hayward Midson Creative Precinct Evaluation

by Mr Terry Byers, Director of Innovation in Learning, Anglican Church Grammar School

Through a five-year research partnership with the University of Melbourne, Churchie has developed evaluative tools that measure the impact of different learning environments on the activity and behaviours on students and teachers. This presentation will focus on the use of the Linking Pedagogy, Space, and Technology (LPTS) observational metric that has evaluated the pedagogical impact on the retrofitted Hayward Midson Creative Precinct. The presentation will focus on:

  • Explore the research design and methodologies, borrowed from the health sciences, which can be used by schools to evaluate the impact of current and new learning environments.
  • Discuss the evidence base derived by the LPTS metric to outline how the spatial transition from conventional studios and workshops to the Precinct ‘open studio’ design change specific elements of teachers’ use of communities of learning, pedagogies, and use of technology.
  • Provide insight into how particular design decisions then influenced student learning experiences and academic outcomes.

Terry Byers (MLI and BEd) is currently the Director of Innovation in Learning at the Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) in Brisbane, Queensland. This role is focused on the effective integration of technology to best increase student’s engagement and academic outcomes.  Terry is currently one of the three University of Melbourne PhD researchers in the 2013-2016 Australian Research Council project ‘Evaluating 21st Century Learning Environments’ (E21LE). E21LE is a research project developing multidisciplinary evaluation strategies for the new generation of learning environments.
