School meets Art: Albany Creek State High School’s new Performing Arts Centre

This project consists of a Performance Arts Centre and Music Centre, connected via shaded walkways to the existing administration building. The site is located in difficult and hilly terrain and met challenges including staged construction, decanting of existing buildings and redirection of existing site services. The building is positioned to minimise disturbance to the existing vegetation and koala habitat.

The concept seeks to articulate music in architectural forms. The building mass along the east is expressed as a series of horizontal lines gently stepping down to relate to the existing school frontage. The façades of the two buildings are woven with a musical cascade of multicoloured translucent sun-shading fins that reflect, refract and filter the light into the outdoor gathering spaces. On the west, the internal functions are expressed outwardly in a stagger of vertical volumes that is analogous of the black keys on a piano.

The building materials and colours are robust and complement existing buildings and school colours.

Prior to touring the facility Professor Brad Haseman, Creative Industries Faculty, CIF Academic Programs, Academic Programs and Services, QUT will provide insights in a short presentation.
