CEFPI invites you to a discussion on contemporary science education, and guided tour of the Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences.

Winner of the CEFPI Victorian Chapter Awards 2014 Education Initiative or Design Solution for an Innovative Program Award, the Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences was conceived as an incubator for contemporary science education. The school brings together some of the brightest young scientific minds, scientists and science educators in a purpose-built facility sitting within one of the premier biomedical and science precincts. The school is the result of a collaborative partnership between University High School, The University of Melbourne, Bio21 Institute and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and is designed to support specific pedagogical approaches which will see students participate in a tertiary style program of lectures, tutorials and laboratory workshops.

A research project undertaken by the University has enabled a direct geothermal system for heating and cooling to be installed beneath the building. This geothermal system, together with other ESD initiatives aid in the design achieving a 5 star energy rating.
